for unison chorus and keyboard

Notes

Shout Joyfully is a short work for unison chorus written for the Sacred Heart Chapel Choir of the College of St Benedict in St Joseph, Minnesota. I have been good friends with their director at the time of the commission and she asked for an up-tempo piece specifically for the Mass on 29 April. The chapel choir at the time had only seven members, all young women, and few trained vocalists. Because of that, I decided to write something that would be in a challenging meter (7/8), but a relatively easy key and range and would only have one vocal line. The piece is energetic throughout with a small “bridge” in 4/4 time about two-thirds of the way through it. The text is taken from the New American Bible’s translation of Psalm 100 with some additional text by me.
