for SSAATTBB chorus, a cappella
Notes
I’ve had occasion to take some time at St John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. During one of these retreats, the psalm at evening prayer really struck me as we were singing it. I immediately went back to my room and found it in the NAB and wrote it down. I began setting it the next day and finished later that week. The resulting psalm setting is in a sort of passacaglia, with the initial melody line held throughout, with only minor changes for syllables or text-painting. The piece begins and ends with a solo voice, slowly adding then removing voices throughout. This piece would provide a challenge for most college choirs.
